中国是世界上第一个将网瘾归类为临床疾病的国家，宣称网瘾是青少年的头号危险，在全国各地建立了400多家网瘾治疗中心帮助青少年戒除网瘾。上周在Sundance电影节上上映的纪录片《网瘾》（《连线》发表的视频片段），讲述了北京一个戒瘾中心几位网瘾少年戒除网瘾的经历。中国建立的戒瘾中心就像是军营和精神病院的奇特混合体，每间宿舍都安装了摄像头监控，接受治疗的青少年必须像军训那样参加各种训练，保持宿舍干净，每天服用治疗药物，接受电击。一位叫Wu Huhu的少年在纪录片中说，他玩《魔兽世界》最长玩了300小时（可观看视频）。还有一些青少年是如此沉迷于网游，他们认为上厕所会影响表现，所以就穿上尿布。网游在中国被称为电子海洛因，玩家的成瘾行为和海洛因的成瘾行为相似。
